I know it sounds crazy, but American multinational food, snack and beverage corporation PepsiCo is apparently working on its own smartphone. PepsiCo has confirmed to Reuters that it will indeed launch a line of Pepsi smartphones and accessories in China: Thus, this means that Pepsi isn’t actually looking to get into the cutthroat market of phone making, but it is instead looking to release a smartphone solely for branding purposes. After all, what else could you expect from a company whose brand name is essential to its sales. PepsiCo will utilize a licensing partner for the venture and the first smartphone is rumored to be called Pepsi P1. While there’s really no shortage of phone makers in China, at the moment we don’t know with whom has Pepsi decide to work. We also know what specs the upcoming P1 handset is going to get:
MediaTek MT6592 chipset 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage 5.5-inch 1080p display 13MP main camera, 5MP front-facing unit 3,000mAh battery Android 5.1 Lollipop
These are some decent specs, and considering that the device is set to launch for a price of $205, maybe this doesn’t sound that crazy after all. Rumor has it that the device will be officially introduced in Beijing on October 20, and it is going to be available only for Chinese customers. When Facebook sided with HTC for their own handset, we thought that was crazy. But if this Pepsi smartphone doesn’t turn out to be a complete disaster, could other big brands follow example? Next thing you know, you’ll be ordering a coffee at Starbucks and you’ll end up buying a Starphone.
